Today we’re going to talk about the importance of claiming your name on all the different social networks. As a part of your overall online marketing plan, the key is to register your name / brand name / product / service / whatever on all the networks before one of your competitors does. Given the speed of competition these days, your competitive advantage can sometimes come down to the online real estate you own.
The best part is, all of the social networks are free!
Think about your industry. If you could go back in time and register the domains that are relevant to your industry a decade ago, would they be worth something today? Think about your biggest competitors, do they have a competitive advantage just because of the site they own, or is it the marketing dollars they’ve invested?
It may be a combination of both, but the first thing you should do is register your name. This has both short term and long term benefits. If you are in an industry that is a bit old fashioned, relying on handshakes and in-person customer service, you’re in luck! You’ll still be one of the early movers in your industry and can get noticed online as an authority in your field. If the industry is a little more advanced, then get out there anyways, it’s your brand. Think about how much money / blood / sweat / tears you’ve already spent on it!
The other thing to bear in mind is that while it’s rare, you could have an unscrupulous (I’ve always wanted to use that word) competitor who can register your name and just sit on it. On the social networks, there isn’t really an overarching governing body, so if your name is gone, it’s gone!
