Copilot Checkout Explained: In-Conversation Checkout Without Losing the Customer

Quick take

Copilot Checkout is Microsoft’s attempt to turn “conversation” into “conversion” without the usual tab-hopping and cart abandonment. The shopper stays inside Copilot, and you (the merchant) stay in control of the transaction.

What Copilot Checkout is (in plain English)

Think of Copilot as the new aisle. A shopper asks for options, compares, asks follow-ups, and when they’re ready to buy… they buy right there.

Microsoft frames this as “no redirect, no friction,” while keeping the merchant as the merchant of record.  This means you keep the customer relationship.

Why ecommerce teams should care

Microsoft shared early internal signals that Copilot-assisted journeys drive more purchases, especially when shopping intent is present.

In other words: if you’re not present in the AI conversation, you’re not in the shortlist.

Who gets it first (and how rollout works)

Copilot Checkout is rolling out in the U.S. on Copilot.com with partner activation across PayPal, Shopify, and Stripe.

Shopify merchants are positioned for automatic enrollment after an opt-out window. Non‑Shopify merchants can apply via Microsoft.

The hidden requirement: your data has to be usable

An AI checkout experience doesn’t magically fix messy catalog data. It punishes it.

To be recommended (and to convert), your product facts need to be accurate, structured, and fresh across three places:

  • Your crawled website content (what AI can learn from pages)
  • Your product feeds/APIs (what you push to platforms)
  • Your live site experience (what an agent can see and act on)

The AOK setup checklist (do this before you chase hacks)

Use this as your “Copilot readiness” punch list.

  • Get your feed right: consistent titles, GTINs, variants, pricing, availability, and images.
  • Add schema: Product + Offer + AggregateRating + Review + Brand + FAQ + ItemList where relevant.
  • Make policies easy to cite: shipping, returns, warranties, and customer support.
  • Keep the site agent-proof: no broken add-to-cart flows, no weird promo-code logic, accurate delivery estimates.
  • Measure the new funnel: track AI-driven sessions, assisted conversion lift, and citation visibility.
